The sad story of Marie Holmes show that while the lack of money may bring about problems and poverty, no amount of money will improve an impoverished individual.
She won $180 million dollars in the lottery, but still lives in the same impoverished conditions. She lives with the same troubled people: Her children are being raised in a home where drug use is evident and she has lost millions in bail money because of them.
Her condition is the same, if not worse, than before her winnings.
Wealth is thought to be a cure for the ills brought about by poverty. Drugs are often said to be an escape from an unpleasant reality. This turns out to be false. Money does not improve character or cure depression. If great wealth makes a rich person's reality so much better, why do so many wealthy people turn to drugs to escape from that reality?
Those who turn away from the true source of happiness will have sad lives, no matter how much wealth they acquire.
Matt 19:21-22 "Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions."
