I read a surprising statement last night in " Confessions" by St. Augustine.
He prayed, "Grant me chastity and continence, but not yet."
He explains that while he wanted to eventually be a godly and moral man, he was afraid that God "... might hear my prayer quickly, too readily heal me of the disease of lust which I preferred to satisfy rather than suppress."
To a young man, the virtues of chastity and continence might certainly seem inconvenient at that time of life. In the world of work, and especially in the world of politics, there are also a host of virtues that might be wished for in the future, but not appreciated if they arrived too soon.
But regardless of how inconvenient virtues may be, God does expect them of us in this present moment.
Heb 12:14 "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
