God or Girlfriend?

I have noticed certain levels of clarity among people regarding music in the church.

There are those who are:

Clearly against Rock Music:

I heard a youth pastor say: "Let's listen to some Christian Rock music and take take some Christian drugs."

The kids said: "There's no such thing as Christian drugs!"

Youth Leader: "Yeah, and there's no such thing as Christian Rock music either."

Clearly for Rock Music:

Some feel Rock music is just the music of this generation that should be used to Glorify God. Others don't care one way or another about it, but use it anyway. They see it as a means to an end, a tool to attract people to church and enable them to enjoy it.

Clearly Ambiguous:

Then there are the fence straddlers. Clarity is what they want to avoid.

There are music groups in this camp who want to succeed in the music world, but they don't care which music world they become popular in. They makes songs that could become popular with either the Christian or secular music camp.

You can spot the songs of these groups by their lyrics: You can't tell if they are singing about God or their girlfriend.

At least in the first two groups, I know Who I am singing about.

Biblical Clarity: The Bible is pretty clear about this: you may be clearly hot or you may be clearly cold, but you better not be in between.

"Rev 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth."

  1. 2 Samuel 6:5 "David and all Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord, with castanets, harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals"....and two very loud rocks.

  2. Yes. It was an unambiguous celebration. Everybody knew who was being praised and why. I think of these events as times of universal celebration after a great event, like when our country celebrates with fireworks and banging big bass drums in parades. I participate in these outpourings of joy. But on the other hand, I wouldn't expect the fireworks to be shot off in church every service, in spite of how much I like them. It would make church more interesting, for sure. But it wouldn't do much for the “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10)" spirit we are trying to encourage during our worship time.
